Getting to a College or University Home Page

You can get to most schools' home pages by pointing your browser to the address or URL (Uniform Resource Locator) for that school. For example:



http://www.(name or initials of college).edu

Wichita State University:     http://www.wichita.edu



If that does not work, or you are not sure of the name or initials of a particular college, the Wichita State University Library has three books (located on Index Table 14 in the Reference Area on the first floor) that provide URL's for schools that have home pages:

Perhaps the simplest way to access a school's home page is to use one of the many links provided below. Many of the links listed under Colleges and Universities--U. S. and Worldwide allow you to search by school name, or by certain criteria that you specify.

American Universities
A listing of links to home pages for American universities that grant bachelor or advanced degrees. If the University as a whole does not yet have a home page, some links are to department or college level pages. Schools are listed in alphabetical order by name.


College and University Home Pages
Provides links to several thousand college and university home pages in 70 countries. Schools can be accessed from either an alphabetical or geographical listing.



College Compass--Colleges and Universities
A list of U.S., international and historically black colleges and universities (there are also categories for Southern States and Mississippi). For U.S. schools, clickable maps guide you to the geographic region or state you are interested in. This listing includes the address, phone number, size of enrollment and tuition costs for all schools in each state, and, if a school's home page is available on the Internet, a link is provided.


The College Guide
Search this relatively small (less than 150) list of U. S. schools by name or by region. Or, click on College Search to pull up a search form that allows you to enter preferences such as Region, Estimated Annual Cost, Freshman Class Size, Surrounding Community Size, Public or Private School, or search on a keyword that you specify. You may also download a Windows or Macintosh version of the Common Application Form.


CollegeNET
Provides a "College Search" section which allows you to search for schools in the following categories: 1) Four Year US Colleges, 2) Four Year Schools by State Map, 3) Community, Technical and Junior Colleges, 4) Schools in Canada, 5) Schools in New Zealand, 6) Law Schools, 7) MBA Programs, 8) Medical Schools, and 9) Schools of Osteopathic Medicine. When you click on Four Year US Colleges, you can search for schools by state or region, adding such criteria as enrollment size and tuition costs preferred, availability of intercollegiate sports, majors offered, etc. An overview of each school is provided, with links to more detailed information on the school's home page. In some cases, you can also request more information from a school simply by clicking on a link to the school's Admissions Office. Many of the schools listed will let you apply while you are online using the database's ApplyWeb software.


CollegeView College Search
Presents profiles of over 3,500 U. S. colleges and universities, virtual tours and multimedia presentations from some schools, electronic applications (AppZap), financial aid information, career planning tools, and more. The College Search function allows you to look for information by typing in the name of a specific college, or by choosing certain criteria that meet your needs, such as Fields of study, Location, Study body size and ethnic mix, religious affiliation, and more.



CollegeXpress
Offers profiles of over 250 private American colleges and universities. You may search for colleges alphabetically by name, by region, or by preferences you select such as career interests, location, number of students, average annual tuition, etc.



Embark
In addition to providing practical information about preparing for college, choosing a major, applying to college, etc., this site allows you to search their list of 3,800 schools to see which ones match your interests and qualifications. You can also search for a school by name or state, and then link directly to that school's home page.

Peterson's Education and Career Center
Click on Colleges & Universities to search for colleges in the U.S. and Canada by name, location, type of degree (2-year or 4-year), type of college (2- or 4-year), religious affiliation, professional degree programs, or by keywords that you specify. A list of 650 schools that accept the "Universal Application" is also available. You can download a Windows or Macintosh version of the Universal Application form at no charge.



Princeton Review--So You Want to Go to College
Click on Finding It and then use the Find-O-Rama search engine to search Princeton Review's list of schools by name, or by criteria such as location, financial aid, sports offered, student life, housing, etc. Provides a sketch of each school, with basic information such as student demographics, most popular majors, statistics on financial aid, tuition & expenses, etc. Also provides a link to the school's home page if one is available. Offers lists of the top 10 colleges in a variety of categories such as academics, politics, social life, and others.


Universities.com
A searchable database of over 4,000 college and university home pages worldwide. Search by name or geographic location.



University Pages
A state-by-state list of links to American college and university home pages.


Wiredscholar.com                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           You'll find pointers on the entire "Go-to-College" process from preparation to getting loans. Wiredscholar also has interactive tools that enable you to analyze the affordability of schools and compare financial aid award letters.

Gradschools.com
A directory of graduate programs in the U.S. and worldwide. Search by choosing a field of study from pre-selected categories, or by typing in a keyword(s). Programs are arranged geographically within each category (East of the Mississippi River or West of the Mississippi River), and programs outside the U.S. as well as distance learning options are also listed.



Peterson's Education & Career Center--Graduate Study
Provides information on graduate and professional programs offered by more than 1,600 accredited colleges and universities in the U.S. and its territories, and by institutions in Canada, Mexico, Europe and Africa that are accredited by U.S. accrediting bodies. Search by school name or location, by discipline, or by keyword.



Princeton Review--So You Want to Go to Grad School
Click on Grad School for information on the GRE and other admission tests. Click on Be a Lawyer, Be a Doctor, or Go to B-School to access Princeton Review's Find-o-Rama software to search for U.S. graduate schools by name or by criteria that you select, such as Student Life, Tuition, Admissions Rating, etc.

U.S. News.com  Graduate School
Click on Find Your Grad School to access information on over 800 U. S. business, engineering, law and medical schools. Search for schools by name, state or field of study. Click on The Rankings to see the U.S. News graduate school rankings taken from their publication, America's Best Graduate Schools.

Common Application Form
The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) develops and distributes the Common Application. This Internet version of the Application is exactly the same as the paper version, and you can download it to your own computer.
