I. Searching and editing in OCLC
1 Search technique:
a. Call up the record.
b. ISBN search is generally quite effective, but used
rarely because few scores have ISBNs.
c. If no ISBN is present, but the item contains a plate
number or publisher number, use the music
number search (mn:####).
d. If these two searches fail, try a name/title (4,4)
or personal name search (4,3,1). You may limit these
by material type of scores (type “/sco”), or by
publication date (type “/1992”).
e. Or try keyword search using combination of personal
name, publisher, and title limited by format (score)
or year.
f If the search results in more than one hit, check for
correct format, publisher, and dates. If all records
are for your score, choose the best one. A good
record will usually have ELvl I or blank, more
complete notes, and may contain added entries (700
fields).
g. If you cannot find a record, pass the item to the
Catalog Librarian for original cataloging.
