Instruction Objectives at
Wichita State University Libraries

Research skills are of special importance to certain classes. This guide to library instruction objectives has been created to inform teaching faculty of three common types of library instruction: the library tour, library orientation, and bibliographic instruction.

Tours are commonly offered to Introduction to the University (LAS I 101) and College English I (ENGL 101) classes, although other classes may also request tours. Students will be able to locate customer-service areas of the library and be able to get more help when they are ready.

Library Orientation takes place in the Ablah Library computer lab. Orientation typically takes place in College English II (ENGL 102) and Composition: Business, Professional, and Technical Writing (ENGL 210). The librarian will provide an overview of the Library’s homepage, as well as demonstrate how to find information using electronic resources available both on and off-campus.

Bibliographic Instruction provides more detail on subject-specific resources. This level is highly customized for each course.

Tours and orientations are taught or supervised by the Instruction Librarian. Bibliographic Instruction is provided by other librarians who are subject specialists. For a complete list of subject specialists see http://library.wichita.edu/colldev/index2.html.

Wichita State University Libraries’ mission is to make available the information resources necessary for learning, teaching, and research and to provide the services that enable students, faculty, and staff to use these resources. University Libraries also supports the University’s service mission by providing community and statewide access to its resources.
