Guidelines for Library Use by High School Student Groups

Introduction:

The goal of these guidelines is to make the best possible use of professional staff and resources of area high school libraries as well as WSU Libraries. Cooperation between WSU Libraries and the high school libraries will directly benefit high school students' research and enable students to use their limited time at the WSU libraries efficiently and productively.

Groups of high school students that visit WSU Libraries should:

• Be accompanied and assisted in their use of the library by a high school librarian or teacher who has visited the library beforehand.
• Be able to use the WSU Libraries Online Catalog without assistance.
• Arrive with call numbers in-hand if their high school library has access to the WSU Libraries Online Catalog.
• Use the available computers at the Community Resource Center if not in need of database instruction.
• Bring money for photocopies or a print card if printouts are needed. (Photocopies and computer printouts both cost $.07 per page and must be paid with a print card or a Shocker card. The print card costs $1.00.)

  Individuals in charge of the visiting high school groups should:

• Schedule their visits to the library two weeks in advance by submitting the Instructional Session Request Form and waiting for a response, or by calling Angela Paul, Instruction Librarian, at 978-5084 or angela.paul@wichita.edu to arrange a date and time. Scheduling an instruction session will ensure that your group will have computers.
• Be aware of the following circulation guidelines for materials for non-WSU students: The Circulation Desk will issue a one-day group card (good for two books per student) to visiting schools who agree to assume the responsibility for any fines or lost charges incurred. Individual cards will not be issued on the day of the visit. "Community User Policies" is available at http://library.wichita.edu/circulation/comuser.htm.
• Groups must be no larger than 25 students. We can accommodate larger groups by making arrangements with Undergraduate Admissions to split your time on campus.
