This is a biographical dictionary with lengthy articles on musical personalities and bands,  a listing of awards and a bibliography.

Folk Music (Baggelaar and Milton)  REF ML3551.B17
Though dated, this work brings together the people, groups, instruments and concepts of the folk music movement.

Folksingers and Folksongs in America  REF ML3550.L4 1965
A bit of everything, this contains biographical entries of singers (notable for their involvement on a grass-roots level), annotated bibliographies of song collections, sections of other bibliographical resources and a discography.

The Guinness Encyclopedia of Popular Music  REF ML102.P66 G84 1995 and
In 6 volumes, this work is an extensive compilation of biographical articles on groups and artists in popular music (folk musicians as well as others).  The 6th volume contains a bibliography by artist and an index for locating individuals within groups.  The 3rd edition is located in the music library, while the 2nd edition loves in Ablah Library reference section.  The 1st edition is available to check out from Ablah Library, 2nd floor.

American Women Songwriters (Grattan)  REF ML106.U3 G73 1993
This provides biographical information on women songwriters in various genres, but has a chapter specific to folk music.

Folk Song Index (Brunnings)  REF ML128.F75 B83 1981
This work indexes over 800 books and journals containing folk songs. 

Songs in Collections (De Charms & Breed)  REF L128.S3 D37 and
Find here an index for art songs and arias, folk songs, carols and sea chanties, found in collections published from approximately 1940-1957.  When looking up the song/aria title, make sure you are looking in the correct section by verification with the table of contents listing.

A 2 volume index to pop, rock and folk songs in collections, listings include songwriter credits and dates. This also provides indexes to first line, composer and performer.

Song Index and Supplement  (Sears)  REF ML128.S3 S31 1966
Though this is primarily an index of art songs, this also covers anthologies of folk songs, sea chanteys, Christmas carols, sacred songs and school/college songs.  Be sure to check both the main section as well as the supplement section, though both are bound together.  An additional copy is found in Ablah Library, 2nd floor.

World Music (Rough Guide)  REF ML3545.W66 1999
Arranged geographically, this provides an overview for each region, followed by an annotated discography.  A previous edition may be found in Ablah Library, 2nd floor.
