NEWS from WSU Libraries

Kansas Gas Service Networked Seminar Complex Dedicated

The dedication of the Libraries’ new Kansas Gas Service Networked Seminar Complex in 224 and 225 of Ablah Library was celebrated on November 8th.   Dean Rao welcomed everyone to the event and gave the history of the rooms' development.   He then turned the podium over to Donald Beggs, WSU president; Bradley Dixon, president of Kansas Gas Service; Elizabeth King, vice president of WSU Advancement; and Michael Schlotterbeck, president of the Student Government Association, for remarks.  After the dedication plaque was unveiled, Beggs, Dixon, and Schlotterbeck  joined John Hutchinson, WSU vice president for Academic Affairs, for the ribbon cutting.

The KGS Networked Seminar Complex is the result of a $100,000 gift received from Kansas Gas Service, a division of ONEOK.  The purpose of the gift was to create a technologically enhanced learning environment for the students and faculty using Ablah Library.  The result has been the total remodeling of two group study rooms designed to meet the digital needs of both students and faculty.   These high-tech rooms are available to faculty and student groups to develop presentations, telecommunication conferences, and other group activities that require information technology. The equipment includes tablet notebook computers with Smartboard software, a wireless projector, receiver, DVD player, and teleconferencing equipment. A scheduling calendar for the rooms can be viewed at http://libdb.wichita.edu/sch/index.php and reservation requests may be submitted on a form found at http://library.wichita.edu/circulation/res_form.htm.  To be able to reserve the equipment, individuals must be certified for competency by the Libraries’ Systems Department.  Training is provided at 9 a.m. every Monday morning and upon special request as the need arises

Libraries Celebrate Constitution Day

University Libraries celebrated Constitution Day on September 16, 2005, with a short celebration in front of the Circulation Desk. Faculty, staff  and students gathered to recite the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution simultaneously with other organizations across the nation while watching a short broadcast that featured Gen. Tommy Franks leading the recitation.  An introduction to the program was provided by Jane Hodge.

A drawing was held after the recitation for the winners of the "Do You Know Your Constitution" contest.  Only those who had answered all of the constitution quiz questions were eligible for the drawing.  The grand prize was a Shocker duffle bag filled with goodies.

A lobby display also was prepared by Nan Myers, Government Documents Librarian, and Jo Gregg, Library Assistant in Government Documents,  that featured information resources for all ages.

Libraries to Celebrate 400th Anniversary of Don Quixote

On Sunday, Oct. 16, John J. Allen and Patricia S. Finch, internationally known Cervantes scholars, will commemorate the 400th anniversary of Don Quixote by presenting the program "Don Quixote in Western Art and Thought." Sponsored by the Wichita State University Library Associates, the talk will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the lower level of Ablah Library. Call (316) 978-3590 for more information.

Combining images and quotes about Don Quixote from around the world, Allen and Finch have crafted a multimedia tribute to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the book's publication. They have presented at Hofstra University, the University of Kentucky, Ohio State University, Middlebury College and the University of Indiana during the past year.

Allen, a native of Wichita, is professor emeritus of Spanish at the University of Kentucky and author of "Don Quixote: Hero or Fool?" and "The Reconstruction of a Spanish Golden Age Playhouse." He was the first editor of the Bulletin of the Cervantes Society and is a past president of the society.

Finch, professor of Spanish at Centre College in Kentucky, published an edition of "La Celestina" in 2003, and has written several articles on Cervantes and on "La Celestina." She is currently working on an English translation of "La Celestina," a classic 15th century work.
