  • I'mTooYoungForThis: A TIME Magazine Best 50 Website for 2007, the I'm Too Young For This! Cancer Foundation, i[2]y, is a pioneering, survivor-led advocacy, support and research organization working exclusively on behalf of survivors and care providers under the age of 40.
  • MedHelp: "finding cures together" includes medical communities and forums staffed by doctors and a search engine pointing to relevant articles and groups
  • Organized Wisdom: a site with the mission to organize the world's best health wisdom, styled as "human-powered health search"
  • PatientsLikeMe: "patients helping patients live better every day" (this site is for patients to find people with their same health concerns and on the same drugs to get feedback on what did or did not work for them)
  • Vimo (compare hospital price for procedures): find and compare prices for various procedures across hospitals
  • Vitals.com: "always check the vitals" provides empirical information (background and quality), peer reviews, and consumer reviews to help consumers find a physician
  • ReliefInsite: site enabling patients to monitor and analyze their pain (option to create a free or premium pain diary for pain tracking which can then be shared with medical professionals, family, or friends)
  • Xoova.com: physician directory site designed to facilitate setting up appointments

Physician Communities

  • BiomedExperts: Biomed Experts is a literature-based scientific social network for the purpose of bringing researchers together and enabling online collaboration
  • Sermo: Sermo "know more, know better" is Latin for conversation and it exists as a community created by physicians for physicians to share observations and ideas in real time

  • Zotero: Zotero is currently a Firefox only extension; by installing Zotero on Firefox Portable you can take take your citations with you anywhere
  • Note: While EndNote is not a free tool, it is freely available to WSU faculty and students

Chat

  • Meebo: multiprotocol web-based IM client (msn, yahoo, aol/aim, google talk (gtalk), jabber and icq), no download required
  • Digsby: multiprotocol IM client that lets you chat with users on AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Google Talk, and Jabber
  • Trillian: multiprotocol instant messaging application for Windows

File Storage/File Sharing

  • Box.net: 1GB of free space with multiple built-in collaboration tools
  • Drop.io: create simple private exchange points called "drops" (additional features include free sending and receiving of faxes and voice recording)
  • MediaFire: free, unlimited disk space with no sign-up required (useful for files up to 100MB)
  • Windows Live SkyDrive: free 5GB of online storage
  • Microsoft Office Live Workspace: Office Live Workspace is another online storage option from Microsoft; while it offers less space it does offer other functionality such as its collaborative tools and the capacity to synchronize with Microsoft Office through its Office add-in)

  • Connotea: combination social bookmarking and citation management tools, particularly tailored to the scientific community
  • Del.icio.us: more general social bookmarking tool with powerful networking tools built in; also can be used to collect resources for a particular class or topic
  • EverNote: manage all your digital information with one web service; new notebooks are private by default unless you specify otherwise
