In 4 volumes, this series examines 327 works of twentieth century drama,
English-language works or translations in English from other languages. Entries
are arranged alphabetically by the title best-known to an English-speaking
audience. Each essay provides essential factual information about the play, a
synopsis, an examination of issues in the play, a discussion of theatrical
elements in the work, an assessment of the play’s critical context, and a list
of recommended readings. Volume 4 contains indices by title and author.

In 2 volumes this chronicles each works’ production on stage, in film and
television. Each entry contains the number of acts, author and date, synopsis,
commentary, critique, location, opening date, cast and credit listing for stage;
studio, release date, cast and credit listings for screen; and series title,
production company, televised date, cast and credit information for television
productions. The second volume contains indices to composers, lyricists,
librettists, authors and playwrights.
The Crown Guide to the World’s
Great Plays REF PN6112.5 .S45 1984
Though this does not venture past the early 1980s, it does cover a great number
of plays, from Ancient Greece through most of the 20th century. Play
entries are arranged by author, with background and an assessment of each
title. The contents are subjective but this is still a good overview of some
prominent titles.

Though no longer considered “contemporary,” this guide provides a brief
description of each play and the role. A helpful section classifies the roles,
dividing them by age, character type, unusual characteristics and roles for
minorities, along with an appendix of plays by gender distribution. Also
contains an index of dramatists and characters.
Arts in America: A Bibliography

A product of the Smithsonian Institution, this 4 volume annotated bibliography
covers art of Native Americans, architecture, decorative arts, design,
sculpture, art of the west, painting, graphic arts and artists, photography,
film, theater, dance, and music. Volume 4 is an index.
