This is a reprint of Mollett’s Illustrated Dictionary of Words Used in Art and Archaeology, originally published 1883.

A Dictionary of Terms in Art REF N33.F2 1969
This is a reprint of the original, published in 1854.

The Yale Dictionary of Art & Artists  REF M33.L353 2000
This contemporary dictionary of terms and biographical entries contains short entries but with broad coverage.

The Thames and Hudson Encyclopaedia of British Art  REF N31.T5 1985
Limited to British art, this work includes biographical entries and terms, with a subject index in the front of the book and a brief bibliography in the back. 

Glossary of Art, Architecture & Design Since 1945  (Walker)  REF N34.W34 1992
As the title indicates, this also covers terms in architecture and design.  Notably, articles are followed by short bibliographies.

Artists’ and Illustrators’ Encyclopedia  REF N33.Q5 1977
Find here concise entries, often accompanied by illustrations.  This may be particularly useful for locating definitions of artists’ tools.

Oxford Dictionary of Art  REF N33.093 1997
Primarily a biographical dictionary (excluding architects) with brief entries, this also includes entries for western art forms.

Oxford Companion to Art    REF N33.O9
Containing short summaries of terms, styles and biographical information, entries are often followed by references to an extensive bibliography.

The Penguin Concise Dictionary of Art History  REF N5300.F64 2000
Particularly related to the study of art history, this volume contains biographical entries with quotations from the artists, definitions of terms, movements, styles, places, and techniques.

The Illustrated Dictionary of Art & Artists  REF N5300.I45 1984
Primarily a biographical dictionary of painters, sculptors and graphic artists, also find here entries on movements, groups, techniques, terms and prominent painters and writers on art.  This also contains portraits or photographs of artists along with some color examples of famous works of different periods of art history.

Find here a guide to contemporary ideas, movements and jargon.

Find here a guide to ideas, movements and jargon used from 1848-1944.

Phaidon Dictionary of Twentieth-Century Art  REF N6490.P46
Specifically related to twentieth-century art, this work provides international coverage to biographical information on artists, entries of terms, movements and schools, often with  suggestions for further reading.

The Oxford Companion to Twentieth-Century Art  REF N6490.O95
 This provides international coverage of biographical articles, articles on movements and associations, terms and regional developments.  Contained here are a large number of entries on British artists in the 20th century.

The Prestel Dictionary of Art and Artists in the 20th Century  REF N6490.P72 2000
Although primarily a biographical dictionary, this also includes entries on movements and terms.  Most articles include bibliographical references for further reading and the work contains a notably large number of color illustrations.

Dictionary of American Art  REF N6505.B34 1979
Primarily a biographical dictionary, this also contains entries central to American art from the 16th century to the second half of the 20th century.

Nineteenth-Century European Art  REF N6757.S77 1999
This is an alphabetical survey of major art movements, works, themes, people and events all relating to art from 1789 to 1914.
