In 14 volumes, this French work is particularly useful for it’s biographical coverage of sculptures, designers and graphic artists, often with associated signatures and cachets.

World Artists 1980-1990  REF N6489.W67 1991
Find here fairly lengthy biographical entries on over 100 artists influential to the decade, including a few artists no longer living.

Contemporary Artists  REF N6490.C6567 1996
This volume provides basic biographical information along with a listing of exhibitions and public collections that have included the artists works, bibliographies for further reading, often a statement by the artist, and critical essays by specialists in the field.

Modern Arts Criticism  REF N6490.M62
In 4 volumes coverage includes painters, sculptors, photographers and architects from the late nineteenth century through the 1980s.  Find here basic biographical information along with lengthy assessments of artists’ work, along with substantial bibliographies.

Early Painters and Engravers in Canada  REF N6548.H37
Covering only those artisans born before 1867, this contains short entries and a lengthy bibliography. 

A Dictionary of Miniaturists  REF ND2890.B8 1958
In 3 volumes, this work provides information about those involved with illuminated books, specifically miniaturists, illuminators, calligraphers and copyists from the establishment of Christianity to the eighteenth century.


A Checklist of Painters

A listing of artists whose works are represented in the Witt Library at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, this is a quick reference dictionary to the names and dates of well-known artists and sometimes the only mention in print of minor artists.  This second edition is found on the reference shelves while the first edition is located on the second floor of Ablah Library.

Here, succinct biographical entries are often accompanied by an example of the artists work.  This work focuses on Western European artists.

Wilson Biographies Plus Illustrated 
This is primarily a full-text database, encompassing biographical coverage from a number of resources including Current Biography and the World Authors Series. Included here are more than 120,000 substantial narrative profiles, more than 32,000 images, links to full-text articles and abstracts from periodicals covered by other Wilson databases.  Please access through the library Electronic Databases page.
