Getting Started with Modifications

Modifying by Module
You'll find that some EMPOWER modules require much more editing than others. For example, the Modules called Using the Catalog and Finding Articles contain information that is very specific to the WSU Libraries and will need to be modified for your library. Other modules contain much more generic information and won't need much attention, such as Choosing Your Topic and Using the Web. There are different types of media within EMPOWER that can be updated, and specialized tools will be required for some of the modifications.

Editing the XHTML and CSS Files
If you are not comfortable editing HTML in plain text you can use an HTML editor, such as Dreamweaver, Expression Web, etc. Please remember that EMPOWER was created with valid XHTML and that web editors do not usually write valid code. It is recommend that you test each page that is modified to make sure that the code is error free by using the W3C HTML Validator, available here: http://validator.w3.org/
There is also a CSS Validator available if you wish to modify the EMPOWER CSS file: http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/
If you would like to learn more about the importance of valid code please read this article: http://validator.w3.org/docs/why.html

Changing the Clip Art
Most of the clip art used in EMPOWER was taken from the Microsoft Clip Art website available here: http://office.microsoft.com/clipart/
It is available to anyone who uses Microsoft Office products. There are plenty of other royalty-free clip art resources available on the Web, or you could create your own!

Editing Images
You may need to make changes to the images in EMPOWER or create your own. There are several good graphics editors available, such as Photoshop or CorelDRAW. There are also some free Open Source ones available on the Web.

Creating Screen Shots
There are some screen shots images in EMPOWER that are only relevant to the WSU Libraries. There are some programs that will allow you to capture and edit screen shots, such as FullShot and SnagIt. Or you can take a shot of your screen using the Print Screen button on your keyboard and then paste the image into a graphics editor to crop and modify.

Creating Video Screencasts
There are some interactive videos in EMPOWER that are only relevant to the WSU Libraries. You can use a program such as Camtasia or Captivate to create these kinds of interactive elements for your library. Or you can remove the videos altogether and create a series of screen shots to demonstrate the information.

Editing Flash Files
There are some Flash elements and games in EMPOWER that were adapted from previous tutorials. Included in the EMPOWER files are the .fla files (editable Flash files) for these features. You will need the Adobe Flash software to edit these files.

Editing Blackboard Quizzes
The EMPOWER files include 6 quizzes that are formatted for the Blackboard course management system. If your institution uses Blackboard these quizzes can be uploaded into any Blackboard course, or exported to your instructors to be used as part of a class. The quizzes are very customized to the WSU Libraries and will need to be modified. If you do not use Blackboard similar quizzes can be created for other course management systems.

License Information
If you are planning to modify EMPOWER for your own library you will need a license. EMPOWER uses a Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial-Share-Alike license. TILT, Searchpath, and inflite (the three tutorials EMPOWER was based on) used an Open Publication License (OPL) which are now no longer supported. You will also need to follow the rule set by EMPOWER and the three previous tutorials to include the attribution statement (found on this page) to the first page of your tutorial and the first page of each module.
