On-campus users or off-campus WSU students, faculty, and staff who need to set up new accounts

Introduction

The WSU Libraries has purchased over 6000 e-books from netLibrary as part of a collection shared with libraries in Kansas and eleven other states through BCR, a nonprofit library cooperative. E-books are electronic versions of printed books and can be viewed online from any terminal connected to the Internet. The WSU Libraries' e-book collection is available to all on-campus users as well as off-campus to WSU-affiliated students, faculty, and staff.

While an account is not required to login to netLibrary and search for e-books, an account is required for "checking out"  books. You will only need to set up an account once; the same login and password may be used in all future logins to netLibrary.

Step 1: Create an account

First-time on-campus users as well as off-campus WSU students, faculty, and staff who want to set up accounts should use the "CREATE AN ACCOUNT" link above. Once you are in netLibrary, click on "Create An Account" on the right side of the screen. You may enter your home or school address. Keep track of your login and password as you will use them each time you login from home or from any institution that subscribes to netLibrary. The checkout period is currently for 72 hours.

If you already have a netLibrary account, simply click on the "LOGIN" link above, and enter your username and password on the right side of the screen.

Step 2: Proceed to search screen

At the main search screen, e-books may be searched by keyword, author, title, subject, publisher, publication date, and ISBN. You may also do a full-text search for any word in any book.

About the E-Book Collections in netLibrary

Wichita State University eBook Collection:

This is a collection of over 6000 copyrighted e-books purchased and shared by libraries in Kansas and eleven other states through BCR, a nonprofit library cooperative. WSU Libraries does not have exclusive use of the collection. The titles in this collection have been added to the WSU Libraries Online Catalog.

The Public Collection:

This is a collection of nearly 4000 e-books that are in the public domain or are available from publishers for free distribution to the public. The collection is focused on the classics in literature and history and includes titles available through Project Gutenberg, one of the first electronic text projects on the Internet.

Browse versus Checkout of E-books

Browse:

You may browse an e-book by clicking on the "Browse the E-Book Online" link. Books may be viewed in 15 minute intervals. If you are actively using a book during the first 15 minutes, you are allowed to view for another 15 minutes, and so forth. If you allow the book to sit idle for more than 15 minutes, the book will revert back to the collection.

Checkout:

If you are an account holder, you may checkout an e-book by clicking on the "Check Out and Read Online" Link. The book is checked out for 72 hours, after which the book reverts back to the collection automatically. If you are finished with the book before that, please check it back in so that it is available for others.

Hand-Held Readers:

netLibrary e-books are not yet readable through hand-held devices.

Copying:

Copyrighted e-books including those in the WSU Libraries' e-book collection may not be copied in full -- only in part. "In part" means roughly 5,000 characters or about one page worth of text. Copying may be done by the "cut and paste" Windows function. Public domain ("public e-books") books may be copied in full.

Printing:

You may print only one page of an e-book at a time. Although you are allowed to print parts of e-books, printing an entire book violates copyright laws. If you print very quickly, the netLibrary software will think you are trying to print the entire book and halt you every 10 pages.

Bookmarking:

Using the "Bookmark Page" button allows a logged-in user to bookmark multiple pages within an open e-Book for quick and easy future reference.

Notes:

Using the "Notes" button, a logged-in user is allowed to add notes to particular pages of an e-book.

Off-campus access:

You are free to use your login and password from off-campus or to use them when you are visiting other institutions that subscribe to netLibrary. Submitting your login and password will put you into the Wichita State University eBook Collection.

Viewing Your Account:

Anytime you would like to view your account to see what you have checked out, click on "eBookshelf."

Getting Help:

For help in using netLibrary, please contact the WSU Libraries' Reference Desk on the first floor of Ablah Library (main library) or call 978-3584. You may also email your questions to our electronic reference service at http://library.wichita.edu/cybrarian.html.
