- What is Infotrieve?
Infotrieve is a document delivery service for WSU faculty, classified staff, and unclassified professionals.
(This particular service is not currently available to student employees.) To learn about Infotrieve,
please review the questions and responses below. If you don't see an answer to your question, please contact
Mary Walker, Electronic Resources Librarian, at 316-978-5792 or
mary.walker@wichita.edu.
- What does Infotrieve do?
Infotreive delivers millions of journal articles not held by the WSU Libraries. The cost of articles
ordered by faculty and staff is subsidized by the Libraries through
funding provided by the WSU Office of Research Administration.
Infotrieve also allows users to set up email alerts to the table of
contents (TOC) of thousands of journals.
- How do I get started and how do I connect to Infotrieve?
Before you can use Infotrieve, you must fill out a Registration Form.
Infotrieve Registration Form. Once your
registration form is processed, you can log onto Infotrieve from any location
and request articles and TOC alerts. Please allow 3 working days for
the processing of your registration. You will be notified when the
registration process is complete.
Once you are registered, click
here to connect:

- Who may use Infotrieve?
At this time, only WSU faculty,
classified staff, unclassified professionals, and research
associates are permitted to set up TOC alerts and make document delivery
requests that are subsidized by the WSU libraries. Students and
student employees may use Infotrieve, but must pay for requested articles
or TOC alerts themselves. All WSU
faculty, staff, and students may continue to request articles and
other materials through Interlibrary Loan.
- When should I use Infotrieve?
Infotrieve is not a free
service; every article that is ordered will be charged to the
Library's account. Therefore, you may only use Infotrieve
to request articles from journals not currently held by the Library.
Of course, you may continue to request any article -- as well as
books and "hard to find" materials -- through
Interlibrary Loan.
- How do I know if WSU Libraries already has the article?
Before making an
Infotrieve request, please check the Online Catalog for the
particular journal and issue you want. If WSU Libraries has that
journal and issue, you will be blocked from ordering articles in Infotrieve.
If you try to order an article from a "blocked" journal held by the
library, you will get an email message with the subject line, "Order
Matched Your Holdings." The message will provide a link to the
Online Catalog so you can check on the print and/or online location
of the journal.
- How do I make a request?
If you already have a
citation and just want to request the article, click on "Order" and
enter your citation information. To search Infotrieve by subject,
keyword, author, journal title, etc., click on ArticleFinder.
This database provides a simple natural language search or an
advanced search option. When you find an article you want, add it to
your cart for ordering.
Remember: If you see
this icon
, the article you want is
held by WSU Libraries, and you will not be allowed to order it through Infotrieve.
- Who pays for Infotrieve?
WSU Libraries pays for
articles ordered by faculty and staff who are registered to use the
service with their own username and password. The subsidizing of
Infotrieve orders is made possible with funding from the Office of
Research Administration. Please note, if you
pay for any articles using a credit card, the Library will not
reimburse you.
- Is there a price limit per item?
Yes, there is a $50
limit per item. You will be blocked from ordering articles that cost more
than $50. You may charge more expensive items to your own
credit card or use Interlibrary Loan to order
them.
- Is there a limit on the number of requests?
Not at this time. In the
future, we may need to reconsider limiting requests as use (or
misuse) of the service warrants.
- How will the articles be delivered?
Many articles are
available for e-delivery as PDF documents
in an email message from Infotrieve.
Some articles come from
Infotrieve as regular PDF documents
requiring only Adobe Acrobat Reader. (To download Adobe, click
here.
If you encounter problems using Adobe 6.0 or 7.0, download and use
Adobe 5.0)
Other articles come as
encrypted PDF documents in an email message. Downloading
these documents requires Infotrieve's E-100 plug-in to Adobe Acrobat Reader. (To download the
E-100 plug-in, click
here.)
Articles that are not
available for direct e-delivery or are undeliverable as Infotrieve PDF documents for
whatever reason will be forwarded to Interlibrary Loan by Infotrieve
as TIF files using Ariel (software
for document transmission via the Internet). Interlibrary Loan will then send
the documents to your desktop in PDF format in an email
message.
In special cases, articles may be faxed or sent via regular mail
(For example, if your e-mailbox is full and cannot accommodate the
document.)
If you have any problems
with reading or downloading any PDF documents sent by Infotrieve,
you may call Infotrieve at 1-800-422-4633 or the Interlibrary Loan
Office at 316-978-3167 for help. Please refer to the article's Info
Order Number when inquiring about a problem order.
- How will I know when my request comes in?
When you first submit an
order you will receive an immediate email confirming your order is
in process or indicating that the library holds the item and
referring you to the library's Online Catalog. When the document is
actually sent to you, it will come as a PDF document link in an email message
either from Infotrieve or from Interlibrary Loan.
- What do I need to read PDF files?
You will need Acrobat
Reader on your PC to download all PDF files. To download Adobe Acrobat Reader, click
here.
If you encounter problems using Adobe 6.0 or 7.0, download and use
Adobe 5.0.
Some articles will be
sent as encrypted PDF files. To read those documents, you will also need Infotrieve's E-100 plug-in to Adobe Acrobat Reader. To download the
E-100 plug-in, click
here.
- How quickly will articles be delivered?
If the article is
available electronically from the publisher, you should have
same-day access to it via email. Otherwise, articles will be sent to the
Interlibrary Loan office through the Ariel system and then forwarded
to your desktop as a PDF file in an email. Although most articles will be delivered
immediately or within 24 hours, the delivery process may take longer in some cases.
- How can I speed up my document delivery request?
You can speed up your
request by providing a complete citation to the article that you want.
If you have questions about what constitutes a complete citation or if
you have only a partial citation, contact a librarian at the Reference
Desk at 316-978-3584 or the subject
librarian for your department for assistance.
- Can I check on the status of my orders?
Yes. You can check
the status of both open orders and all orders under "Check Order Status"
on the "welcome" screen when you first logon to Infotrieve. You
can also check the status of individual orders by entering the Order
Info Number(s) in the box provided.
- What if I do not want my requested articles delivered electronically?
Please contact Mary Walker, Electronic
Resources Librarian, at 316-978-5792 or
mary.walker@wichita.edu to set up an alternative delivery option.
- Can I only order journal articles with Infotrieve?
While Infotrieve
specializes in delivering journal articles, it is possible to use
Infotrieve to order conference proceedings and other types of
reports. After checking the WSU Libraries' Online Catalog to make
sure we do not already own the item, use the Infotrieve order form
to enter the complete citation information for the requested item.
- How do I set up Table of Contents Alerts?
To set up Table of
Contents (TOC) Alerts, click on "Table of Contents" and search for the
journal by title or subject. If the title has this icon
,
you can add it to your TOC Alerts by clicking on "Add to TOC Alert
Profile".
- Does Infotrieve work with Macs?
To open files from
Infotrieve, Mac users must have a file converter on their machine.
To download Graphic Converter, please go to
Lemke Software.

316-978-5792 or
