The opening of a dual exhibition of the Downing Collection of Asmat Art at Wichita State University will open with an invitation-only gala event on the evening of April 23, 2004.  The exhibitions will be titled: Spirit Journeys: Art of the Asmat, at the Ulrich Museum and Spirit Journeys: Ritual and Ceremony Among the Asmat at the Holmes Museum of Anthropology.

Reservations are required in advance. For reservation and cost information, call 978-3664 or visit http://www.wichita.edu/spiritjourneys.

The opening evening will be a truly exciting gala with exotic food, music and entertainment. Guests will feel like they have entered the remote world of the Asmat. Event chairs are Mary Lynn and Bill Oliver, Kathryn Galichia, Gayla and Dan Carney, and Karla and Joe Davison. Honorary Chairs are WSU President and First Lady, Don and Shirley Beggs; Paula and Barry  Downing, sponsors of the 2001 collecting expedition; and Peter Bakwin, a WSU supporter who gave his collection of over one hundred Asmat pieces to the WSU in 2003.

The Asmat Museum of Art in Saint Paul, Minn., will hold a board of directors meeting in Wichita that weekend to accommodate its members attending the exhibit opening.

The next day, Saturday the 24th will be a free family, Adventure Day with lectures, videos and entertainment designed to enlighten the public about the Asmat, and the plight of  remote cultures such as theirs in a developing and shrinking world.
