Issued by the Office of Management and Budget, the SIC Manual is the guide to a classification system that divides U.S. industries by type of activity. Each industry is assigned a unique code number (SIC CODE) that represents the product or service of that industry. The SIC system includes all areas of economic activity (agriculture, construction, manufacturing, services, wholesale and retail trade, etc.).

    Example of an industry breakdown:

    28 Chemical and Allied Products
    283 Drugs
    2834 Pharmaceutical Preparations

Business & Company Resource Center indexes over 950 business periodicals. These include scholarly journals, general business magazines, trade publications, and local business publications. The full text of articles is available for roughly half the titles indexed. The full image (via Adobe Acrobat) is also available for many titles. In addition, citations and full text articles may be emailed to user provided address. BCRC also includes detailed company histories, investment reports, company rankings, and industry overviews.

ABI/INFORM provides indexing to over 900 business trade journals, magazines, and journals, and for each entry an abstract of the article is included. Full text is available for approximately half the titles indexed. ABI/INFORM also offers full text of the Wall Street Journal from 1984-present. As with paper indexes, you may search by specific subject terms. Also, individual words and phrases may be searched for in the titles of articles or in their abstracts. This allows for information on very detailed concepts and rarely mentioned companies to be located quickly. Full text articles can be emailed to a user specified address.

This index provides subject access to the Wall Street Journal (Final Eastern Edition), which is available on Microfilm 128. The General News Section is arranged alphabetically by subject and the Corporation News Section is arranged by company name. Below each subject and company name is a chronological list of articles, together with the date, page, and column of the article. 

Abstracts of all articles appearing in the WSJ Eastern edition are available beginning January 1989 (selected abstracting May 1973 through December 1988) through LexisNexis Academic (on-campus/Shocknet2/PIN access only). When connected

Each Federal Reserve Bank gathers anecdotal information on current economic conditions in its District through reports from Bank and Branch directors and interviews with key businessmen, economists, market experts, and other sources. The Beige Book summarizes this information by District and sector.

FRED II provides both historical and current U.S. economic and financial data, including daily U.S. interest rates, monetary and business indicators, exchange rates, and balance of payments. The FRED II database includes over 800 U.S. economic time series. With FRED II you can download data in Microsoft Excel and text formats and view charts of data series. All files, except those that are compressed, are in ASCII format. Compressed files are in .zip or self-extracting .exe formats. The compressed files contain all of the ASCII files within that category of data.

Arranged in 33 surveys, this work provides continuous economic and investment analysis of 65 leading U.S. industries. A "Basic Analysis" provides a complete investment picture of the industry, outlines the industry's place in the total economy and examines its operating environment. A "Current Survey" reports the latest developments within an industry and estimates results for the period immediately ahead for each industry. Available online in S&P's NetAdvantage.

Provides for each of 350 limes of business a common-size balance sheet and income statement based on the size of the business within its industry. Gives sixteen financial ratios for each line of business. The ratios are presented first by the size of the business and then by quartiles within that size.

The information in this source is compiled by Leo Troy, a professor of economics at Rutgers University. The numbers are based on summary statistics generated by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. Computer tapes from the IRS tabulate the total dollar value of business tax returns line by line. Troy uses this aggregate data to calculate figures in common size and ratio form. Although the publication appears annually, there is a considerable time lag before IRS data are made available-generally about three years.

Company websites usually include background information on the company and recent news. Financial and stock information, the company's annual report, and a listing of job openings may be provided. These sites usually provide for user feedback.

Hoover's Company Capsules.

These brief reports present basic information on more than 10,000 companies. Included are a company summary, address and phone number, company officer information, and sales figures. This database can be searched by company name or ticker symbol. Advanced searching by location, industry, and annual sales is also available.

In 1900, John Moody published Moody's® Manual of Industrial and Miscellaneous Securities, the first guide to U.S. public companies. Mergent, with its purchase of Moody’s, now provides this in-depth company information once only available in printed manuals via the Internet. MergentOnline provides a fully searchable database of 15,000 U.S. public companies (active and inactive) listed on the NYSE, AMEX and NASDAQ, and includes corporate information for 20,000 non-U.S. companies. Fifteen years is the standard time frame for the financial data provided. Each company report also includes up-to-the-minute news items, a company description (narrative with SIC and NAICS information), and information on a company’s executives, property, capital stock (dividends and splits) and long-term debt (bonds and notes). Financial information may be downloaded utilizing software applications such as Microsoft® Word, Microsoft® Excel or Adobe® Acrobat® Reader®.

The individual manuals--Bank and Finance, Industrial, Municipal and Government, OTC, Public Utilities, Transportation, and International (Table 8)--provide information on the history, products, services, divisions, and subsidiaries of larger companies. Often includes income statements, balance sheets, corporate debt structure, and stock information.  (Entitled Moody's Manuals through 1999.)  This information is now available online. Annual Reports of Corporations. (Annual)

Annual Reports present company information from the company's perspective. They usually contain narrative descriptions of the company's operations, special projects, its goals for the future, and financial statistics. Include an income statement and balance sheet for present and preceding fiscal years.

EDGAR, the Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrival system, performs automated collection of submissions by companies to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). All public domestic companies are required to make their fillings on EDGAR, except for filings made to the Commission's regional offices and filings made in paper because of a hardship exemption. Annual reports to shareholders (except in the case of investment companies) need not be submitted on EDGAR, although some companies do so voluntarily. However, the annual report on Form 10-K or 10-KSB, which contains much of the same information, is required to be filed on EDGAR. Standard & Poor's COMPUSTAT (North America). (updated quarterly)
The COMPUSTAT (North America) database contains fundamental financial, statistical and market data for U.S. and Canadian corporations, banks, S&L’s, ADR’s/ADS’s, business segments, geographical areas, industry composites and indexes. Extensive coverage of annual and quarterly Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow and supplemental data items is provided on publicly held companies. COMPUSTAT (North America) data is derived from publicly traded companies and closed-end funds trading on the NYSE, AMEX, NASDAQ, OTC and Canadian stock exchanges, and wholly-owned subsidiaries of companies that are required to file with the SEC. The data is accessed using the Research Insight software. (For a guide to using the software click here). Research Insight may be used for advances quantitative analysis, including database queries, or for quick access to company/industry financial statements and data.

Separate volumes are published for the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange, and Nasdaq. Each page of the Daily Stock Price Record carries three months of day-by-day prices on up to five different stocks. The high, low and closing prices of stocks traded are given, plus bid and asked prices for non-traded securities. Shown for each stock are its ticker symbol, shares outstanding, dividend information, earnings for most recently reported four quarters, short interest position, a weekly relative strength ratio, and a 30-week moving average price. Each volume also contains daily information on such stock market indicators as daily S&P's 500 Composite Index and its components; Dow Jones Avarages; total volume; advance-decline line; and others. Current and historical stock quotes are also available from YAHOO!.

This series covers every company listed on the New York and American exchanges, together with over 1,600 OTC companies. Each company profile consists of a standardized, two-page report. The emphasis is on factual analysis, but investment advise appears in the "Summary" and "Current Outlook" sections. Each firm is also given an "S&P Ranking" from A+ to D (with D used to designate firms undergoing bankruptcy or reorganization.)  Available online in S&P's NetAdvantage.

In a pocket-sized format, this work presents a statistical summary of investment data on over 5,100 common and preferred stocks, listed and over-the-counter. Among the items of information given on each are principle business, S&P earnings and dividend rankings for common stocks, ratings for preferred stocks, institutional holdings, dividend rates and yields, price-earnings ratios, financial position, annual earnings and earnings estimates.  Available online in S&P's NetAdvantage.

Similar in layout to the S&P Stock Guide, this pocket guide contains descriptive and statistical data on approximately 4,800 corporate bonds and their issuing companies. Data presented for each company include its fixed charges time earnings (annual for 3 years and latest accounting period available), and very abbreviated balance sheet information. For each bond issue, extensive data, including its S&P quality rating, is given.  Now available online in S&P's NetAdvantage.

Value Line Investment Survey. (Continuously Revised)

This advisory service considers over 1,700 stocks, is arranged in 80 industry categories, and provides a brief analysis of each industry. Presents for each company a chart of its stock's market price over the last 15 years, the stock's beta, plus many other financial statistics. Presents commentary on the current market trends, and offers an explicit investment policy to follow. Individual stocks are discussed and recommendations made for a variety of investment objectives. This Dow Jones publication highlights important financial events in its cover story, and contains major sections devoted to editorial commentary and the OTC. And the statistics Section contains information on over 50 statistics related to the markets, and stock indicators, stock indexes, and Barron's statistics.

This directory is a standard reference for current, verified data covering over 140,000 U.S. companies. Volumes 1-3 contain an alphabetic listing of companies, and includes information such as the company's address and phone number, value of assets, number of employees, names of officers, and a brief description of the business. Volume 4 provides state specific data, arranging the companies by zip code. Vol. 5 ranks companies by sales within 4-digit SIC Codes.
